Pathology Photo of the Day:

Soap Bubble Appearance described in an infectious disease.

Do you know the name of the organism?

Dr  Sampurna Roy  MD

1) In the cerebral cortex of the brain there are soap bubble cysts full of organism, Cryptococcus Neoformans.

Only the centre of the organism is visible, the thick gelatinous capsule remaining unstained.

2) This shows another cyst in the superficial cortex of the brain which contains large numbers of the organism.

There is relatively less microglial reaction in the underlying cortex (left) but in the subarachnoid space (right) there is fibroplasia and giant cell reaction.
