This condition is recognized as deposition of a lipofuscin-like pigment in the epithelium, but there is no inflammatory reaction to it, which distinguishes it from ceroid granulomas and Xanthogranulomatous Cholecystitis. The lesion is similar to that of melanosis coli.

Melanosis of the gall bladder.Pathology. 1980 Apr;12(2):265-7.

A case of melanosis of the gall bladder is described. Ultrastructural examination confirms that the pigment is related to lipofuscin.
