Pathology of Absence (Agenesis) of the Gallbladder

Dr Sampurna Roy  MD

Occasionally the gallbladder is absent.

Stones have been found in common bile duct in nearly 50% of cases.

In 40-70% of cases this anomaly is associated with other gastrointestinal, skeletal, cardiovascular and genitourinary malformations.

Agenesis is thought to result from the failure of development of the ventrocaudal sacculation of the hepatic diverticulum. A vestigial or hypoplastic structure may be present.

The cystic duct is usually also absent and the gallbladder fossa on the undersuface of the liver is poorly developed.

Despite modern diagnostic methods this agenesis which is often combined with a variety of malformations is first realized during operation or postmortem.

Combinations of atypical clinical signs and sonographical or radiological absence of the gallbladder should point at agenesia of the gallbladder and to look for further malformations.
